DIBI 33/07 CALL#1 "The Use of IT for ELT"

Dear Students,

Having researched "the use of Information Technology for ELT", I would like you to summarize the results into not more than 100 words essay. Make sure that your ideas does not contradict with your units' policy and capacity. It is important to think of the implementation of IT integrally in terms of looking at the parents' unit resources. We have to consider also the optimum use of the already available technology in our unit. As such, each and every idea will not similar, but it will complete one another.

The Use of Information Technology
For English Language Teaching


The development of technology and the advancement of knowledge have a great influence in every sector of our lives, including using Information and Technology (IT) in English language teaching (ELT). There are some reasons why we use computer technology in ELT. Firstly, for students technology can help them to produced excellent published work. Another benefit of using computer technology for students is that they have fun in learning and when it’s fun, so they can really learn. For teachers, on the other hand, technology can help them to find information easily. Technology can also allow for the easy production, storage, and retrieval of prepared materials such as certificates or work sheets. In other words, technology can assist good teaching process and interactive learning. IT provides also many facilities and assists our communication such as : E-mail, conferencing, synchronous chat, video conferencing, audio-conferencing, discussion lists, newsgroups, web-browsing, multimedia and illustrative presentation.

Using IT for the interactive learning n teaching of English is very beneficial; however, it costs a lot of money. Despite the high cost for the use of IT in ELT, Defense Language Education and Training Center has been trying to promote interactive English language learning through IT. Most teachers especially English teachers have always used some technology in teaching for e.g. overhead projection devices, video equipment, scanners, printer, CD equipment and any device to access, present, manipulate and communicate word, sounds and images to enable us to create meaning. But using computer technology in the classroom has been a big question because not all teachers can work/teach with computer properly. So, some of them still need technical assistance and computer training.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY



The application of information technology in English language teaching renders the importance of IT acquisition to be adapted within curriculum. Educators have been using IT for many years to support the comprehension of language teaching. Hence, the use of it becomes increasingly more important. Computer has given much influence and placed a significant role in conducting English teaching and learning through information assessment to capture any recent teaching material and methodology as well. Through the internet technology people will be easier to reach and share not only information, but also the subject of any kind of lesson.
The internet is a very good medium to be used by the unit located faraway from Pusdiklat Bahasa or defense language school or other courses. 141 battalion of second military area command, located in Muara Enim of south Sumatera, the unit where I am now posted, for instance, is still 180 km from the nearest English Regional Course. Since it is located in very remote area, it is almost impossible to joint in a formal or non formal English course as Kibi (Basic English Course) or other private english courses. A teacher teaching in this unit, nevertheless, may use internet to get in touch with other institution to get the suitable sources for his students. There are many places available for students or teachers themselves such as hyper-texts, web-pages, e-mail communications, and multimedia text.In conclusion, computer and internet are very helpful for teacher to support his teaching tasks within 141 Battalion. In the near future, hopefully the members can be taught using special material like Tactical English which is useful to support their specific combat tasks.

Information Technology Should be Provided in Educational Institution to Support Learning Process.

To reach successful objective, for example in learning process, the facilities that can support the aim should be provided for both learners and staff members. Dealing with the necessity such as information and research of technology in global environment, both software and hardware are really needed and should be seriously supplied by the institution. We can receive a lot of advantages from equipment such as computer, LCD, and language laboratory to accomplish work. As a result, it can not only make our assignment easier to be finished but also relative faster and safer to accomplished. Besides the software such as some programs on the computer, I believe, there is an access which can really help people in working. A great deal number of data, links for business, entertainment, and etc. can be down loaded from internet. Albeit it may be a bit disturbances for security data base because of bad human behavior for their own business.

The implementation and the access of IT ( Information Technology) in my unit have been developed seriously. For instance, the access of internet has been installed to every department of directory in the institution. It is planned to develop daily work as the bureaucracy among directories in my unit which is called LAN ( Local Area Network). The multimedia systems are supplied in language laboratory to support students’ improvement in language capability. The Indonesian Naval Command and Staff College as the highest educational institution in the Indonesia Navy provides such good facilities to explore the Information Technology and support both students and staff members in developing assignment to obtain betterment in the future>

In the recent years, technology is used in any kind of humans’ activities. Internet is a kind of modern technology which is used by people. There, we can find any information which is useful. One of the technologies is called Information Technology (IT).
Information technology (IT) is a newest technology which is useful dealing with the improvement of teaching learning process. For teachers, IT help them to find information easily, allow for the easy production, storage and retrieval of prepared materials such as certificates and work required sheets, etc. For the students, IT can help them to produce excellent published work, be source of significant amount of reading materials, be fun motivational and fun.
Computer technology presents challenges and opportunities that can make an increasingly important part of English. In my unit, Iswahjudi Language School, multi media laboratory is used for the students and the teachers as well. The students can practice many things there such as speaking, reading, listening and writing or four language skills. Because multi media laboratory is still a new media, both the students and the teachers do their activities by fun. Unfortunately, there is no internet facility connected to the lab. Therefore, the lab can not be used as maximal as possible. Teachers can not enlarge the source of teaching learning by using internet. The use of multi media laboratory seems like useless.
In regard to the problem in maximizing the use of multi media laboratory in my unit, I suggest my unit to provide the internet facility so that use of multi media lab will be more beneficial.
All in all, Information Technology, the newest technology is needed in teaching learning process. Furthermore, the internet facility is needed to support the teaching learning process itself.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN MY UNIT

Nowadays, Information Technology ( IT ) has become a top priotity among thousand people in the world. Due to the fact that IT has significant role to gain skillfully usefull objective of learning process. One of the Infomation Technology which familiarizes to student is multimedia laboratory assisting them to explore information dealing with their lesson.

In 2006, my unit Iswahjudi Languge School got multimedia laboratory from Education service which consists of a set of data computer used by teacher as a master and 20 sets for students.In generral, Multimedia english laboratory is classified into two main parts that they have different fucntion in accordence with operating system . On account of each fucntion of the item that easy for user namely both instructors and students themselves to operate the multimedia english laboratory when they are learning. For this time,The multimedia english laboratory in my unit applied in teaching learning prosess in limited condition, for instance to cunduct the test,quiz,teaching reading and listening.actually, from the firt stage, the main purpose of multimedia laboratory to get newest information to support student's learning prosess.On the other hand, the laboratory haven't been facilited by internet network yet.As a result, we can't utilized maximally.Nevertheless,students be able to study by themselves by opening the materials that already provided in the computer.

All in all, the course of action which have been planned by my unit is to have internet network and to prepare the instructors having qualified the Information Technology skill so that the learning prosess can acchieve maximum result. First lieutenant As'ad

Improving Teacher and Learner by using Information Technology


The increasing necessity of using IT in ELT classroom makes it compulsory to be applied quickly. It’s very important for the teacher and trainee to improve their skill in using IT. We have to be aware that now technology of information can support our learning teaching process
I’m posted in Training and Education Centre where all the modern course are held there, surely that I’m as an English teacher must expert in teaching. We can find a lot of reference from IT such as internet however in my unit have not got the internet yet.
Personally, I realize that as a Class commander of Intensive English Course I am going to catch up all the IT programme to give a lot of information for my student. As an English Instructor, I have to know the benefit of technology for instance allow for the easy production, storage and retrieval of prepared material such as certificates and work required sheets, free up communication with other teachers, help teachers to find information easily and assist good teaching but not replace it.
Finally, the teaching strategies are needed the practical information of computers. It can give challenges and opportunities to highlight the most useful part of English material in particular.

THE PURPOSE OF USING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE ELT

Globalization says whole the world. One effect of globalizations is information technology. Pusdik pengmilum is the unit where all teachers training and English course are held there. For that reason, the member , trainee even the teacher must have a lot of knowledges and the current information as well, in accordance with information technology ( IT ).

In term of information technology, CO of Pusdik Pengmilum has already done his best on providing many medias such as computer ( multimedia ) for improving teacher knowledge especially English teachers. Therefore for both the English trainee and English teacher must enhance their skills through IT. However Pusdik Pengmilum doesn’t provide internet yet, it’s one of our problems to obtain Information dealing with IT.

It is undeniable fact that by using IT. We are as an English teacher can apply a better English. As I told you that Pusdik pengmilum has been equipped with Multimedia ( Computer ) for teaching learning process, so for student Computer mastering is compulsory due to the fact that it can be more useful for example it can be very motivational, can be fun and help them to provide excellent published work ; meanwhile , for the teacher computer Technology might help the teacher to find information easily and assist good teaching as well.

Well, I’m sure in a very short time ( in the near future ) Pusdik pengmilum will provide the modern Technology to support Teaching Learning process and broaden our knowledge.

Using IT In The English Language Teaching Classroom

As we know that information technology or IT for short, has proved to be a better means of language teaching. By using IT in English teaching, both teachers and students gain a lot of advantages. IT is very motivational for students to learn English. Moreover, it can be the source of a significant amount of reading material and help students to produce excellent published work. For teachers, IT allows for the easy production, storage, and retrieval of prepared materials, free up communication with other teachers, help teachers to find information easily and assist good teaching without replacing it.
In 505 Training Squadron especially Halim Language School (HLS), the use of IT hasn’t been maximized, for the IT equipment is still being completed. But in a short time, the unit will be completed with multimedia language laboratory provided with internet connection. Later, IT will help the teaching and learning process so that students of HLS will be more independent in completing their tasks and they will get used to using IT wherever they are. As a conclusion , the familiarization of IT among English learners will bring them to a new world of learning.

To sump up, computers are, on the one hand, impacting on the way in which we define our subject matter and, on the other hand, are also impacting upon the English language, upon the subject matter itself. This new age would seem to go hand in hand with task-based approaches and represents challenges for everyone involved in ELT. For practitioners, applied linguists and educators there is a changed dynamic in which computers have now become much more than a tool or a tutor for developing language skills. This traditional distinction (Levy, 1997) would no longer seem adequate. Warschauer and Healey (1998) have observed that it is now less a question of the role of computers in the language classroom and more a question of the role of the language classroom in an information technology society.
Language teaching education is clearly entering a new and largely uncharted phase and we would seem to be at a crossroads. Warchauer and Kern (2000) have identified this as a "sociocognitive phase" where, unlike in previous phases, students interact with each other and the world via the computer. A great deal of work has focused on the value of computers in learning or second language acquisition (see for example Cameron, 1999; Chambers and Davies, 2001; Chapelle, 2000; Debski and Levy, 1999; Egbert and Hanson-Smith, 1999; Zhao, 2003) but rather less, beyond resource publications (Dudeney, 2000; Sperling, 1998; Teeler, 2000; Windeatt et. al. 2000), on the implications of the content of teaching itself, i.e. the syllabus. Even less consideration seems to have been given to how we see, define or classify our learners.

Using Information Technology in the English Language Teaching


The global advancement has affected our country like technology and knowledge, we have to adjust this condition. Besides, computer is one of the important things which relates directly to technology and knowledge. Computer also assists us to access everything by using internet program and it usually called information technology. We are as teachers, we had better know about information technology in the English language teaching (ELT) which can further helps us to gain some information about educational program. There are the benefits for teachers in using information technology in ELT, such as help the teachers to find information/material easily and free up communication with other teachers. On the other hand, there are also benefits for students in using information technology in ELT, such as it is very motivational, fun and the source of significant amount reading material/information.
In accordance with my recent position in IDAFA, the institution intends to form IDAFA carrier officer with the academic level qualification to support the daily duties as the defense forces. It means that IDAFA has to catch up with information technology in English language teaching to conduct their tasks or duties. IDAFA has already got multimedia laboratories which help cadet to enhance their knowledge, especially in English program.

Despite the video tape and the television, computer is still one of the most important sources of information. It plays such a significant role in English Language Teaching that it is almost impossible to imagine how we would know about the world if there were no computer. Why we use computer technology in English? There are two types of reasons for using computer technology in English. First, there are the advantages to teachers and students in any learning area. Second, there are the challenges and opportunities presented by computer technology.
There are some advantages to students from computer technology in any learning area, for instance, students can be very motivational in learning English, can be the source of a significant of reading material, can be fun and when it is fun students will learn, help students to produce excellent work, while the advantages to teachers, such as technology can give opportunity to easily produce teaching materials, can communicate with other teachers, and assist teachers to find information easily.
There are the challenges and opportunities presented by computer technology, these include creating and using new kinds of texts, such as, web-pages, e-mail communications, and multi-media texts, teaching students to be critical readers and viewers of such texts, and teaching students how to make judgements about appropriate use of different communications.
In my unit, Hussein Sastranegara Language School, the use of Information Technology has been conducted well. Despite the video tape, television, LCD, OHPs, games machines, computer is also use in my unit as sources of teaching materials. We have twenty one computers in our laboratory. It is very useful for teacher in using the laboratory to introduce the whole class to skills, knowledge or software/hardware. Hope that from this facility the students and the teachers can achieve the goal of learning process.

The Use of IT Applied in Language School


The use of Information and Technology (IT), especially computer, in teaching English is based on two kinds of reasons. First, the benefits for teachers and students. For the teachers, IT offers an easy way in making production and preparing teaching materials creates two ways communication among teachers, assists teachers to get information dealing with teaching activity easily and supports good teaching. While for the students, IT can arouse students’ intention to learn more and give many references for reading materials, so it is more efficient. Besides, IT can be fun because it offers a lot of games dealing with the lesson. And the last, it also assists students to be more creative in producing excellent published works. Second, it is a challenge to use computer-bases technology which leads to the development of teaching English and to get up to date with the current use of information.
It is necessary that language school such as Halim Language School apply the use of IT in teaching English. It can be applied by combining computer with other forms of technology such as camera, video camera, OHPs, LCD, sound recording, CDR, DVD-R, etc. The existence of multimedia laboratory supported by IT qualified teachers is the form of IT applied in Halim Language School which assists the teachers and the students in English teaching-learning process. A room full of computers introduces the whole class with collaboration skills or knowledge and assigns specific activities to each student such as interactive quiz, games, discussions, writing, etc. Furthermore, it also helps teachers to build free up communication with the students and give feedback to them individually if needed.
Therefore, the use of IT in language school is very important since it gives a lot of benefits in order to assist teachers in delivering the knowledge creatively and help students to get information dealing with their lesson easily.

The Use of Information Technology in English Language Teaching

Have you ever noticed that information technology applied in ELT classroom has significantly brought the computer practical acquisition to the forefront? By this opinion, teachers gradually encounter the need to cope with the recent advancement of computer technology to be utilized in providing more complete yet challenging ELT support. The use of IT is mainly aimed at giving teachers up-to-date materials and the current information dealing with teaching practice in particular. The focus of applying computer to assist language learning will be on applicable ideas, techniques, and methodology . IT proficiency is not a primary prerequisite, but a basic comprehension is fully needed to vary the way of establishing teaching instruction in ELT classroom.
There are of course, advantages for teachers to grab such as allowing for the easy creation , storage and utilization of essential materials (certificates and worksheets, etc), building up free communication with other teachers to find new avenues for a significant breakthrough in ELT classroom, assisting teachers in interesting learning process but not replacing it hence, both basic components still run their inherent roles in teaching learning process. While for students IT can be very supportive and amusing yet puzzling, be the source to consult with numerous amount of interactive learning materials. However, the appearance of new kinds of texts and the follow up consequence infer the need to teach students to utilize these texts. in addition there will be an alternation of social communication via computers as students learn to communicate interactively through different avenues of computer communication. All of these aspects make active IT connected -teaching - material users be critical readers and viewers as well.
Concerning with my recent position as English Instructor in Halim Language School, I often encounter some problems to use IT to support language learning for Air force members who rapidly require the recent data and information in special English terms. Since my unit is still in progress of constructing new multimedia building, the availability of computer and other IT equipment is still limited in number. To cope with this technology cap, the instructors gradually use other forms of provided technology such as OHPS, sound recording and CDROM. Another way is to encourage public internet and home computer use for publishing or doing research. Any efforts to motivate students to explore any areas of learning materials. All of these mechanisms are intended to gradually set computer assessed information becomes one of the option to learn English for Air force members.
